Honoree
Tamlyn Tomita
Tamlyn Tomita is an artist, activist, and actor best known for her role as Kumiko in The Karate Kid, Part 2 alongside actors Noriyuki “Pat” Morita and Nobu McCarthy, and whose stories continue on Cobra Kai. Other films include Ultraman: Rising, The Joy Luck Club, The Day After Tomorrow, Come See the Paradise, and the television shows Avatar: The Last Airbender, Blue Eye Samurai, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, The Good Doctor, The Man in the High Castle, Teen Wolf, Glee, and Eureka. A native Angeleno and a proud AAPI embracing her Okinawan, Japanese, and Filipino heritages, she advocates for stories to be told from a “golden” perspective. She is a member of JANM’s Board of Governors and co-founder of Outside In Theatre, which partners with JANM and StoryBoldly to bring Defining Courage to cities nationwide.
Musical Performance
Davis Gaines
Davis Gaines performed the title role in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera over 2,000 times on Broadway and in Los Angeles, where he remains LA’s longest-running Phantom. Other Broadway and National Tour credits include Raoul in The Phantom of the Opera, Cornelius Hackl in Hello, Dolly!, Camelot, and The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Gaines received Best Actor awards for his portrayals of Don Quixote in Man of La Mancha and Hannibal Lecter in SILENCE! The Musical and has appeared in numerous films and television shows. He has sung for six US Presidents and with virtually every major symphony orchestra in North America, including the New York Pops at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
