Re-energize the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy as a platform for civic engagement with events and issues that shape our nation—including race, the fragility of democracy, shared values, civil rights and social justice, and the arts ($7.5 million).

As we reimagine our spaces, we must also reshape our programs to tell stories in powerful ways through the National Center for the Preservation of Democracy, Discover Nikkei, and our traveling exhibitions.

The National Center for the Preservation of Democracy is a place that transforms attitudes, builds bridges, influences culture, and promotes civic engagement. Exhibitions, performances, and programs for a wide and diverse audience will include a Distinguished Lecture Series honoring the late Secretary Norman Y. Mineta and Irene Hirano Inouye, a speaker series on current events and literature, arts fellowships and residencies, youth programs on civic engagement, and anti-hate public awareness campaigns.

We will also expand our presence and tell our stories nationally and internationally by organizing traveling exhibitions. American stories that resonate with a broad public, drawn from JANM’s extensive collection, will be shared in exhibitions that inspire creativity and reflection among audiences of diverse ages and backgrounds throughout the nation.

Discover Nikkei is a major online resource and multilingual website that brings together the voices and experiences of Nikkei (Japanese emigrants and their descendants), who have created communities throughout the world. At the same time, it seeks to explore the diverse and ever-changing meaning of the term Nikkei. Since 2005, Discover Nikkei has published articles by over 1,000 writers worldwide and excerpts from nearly 200 video life history interviews. Its content represents fifteen countries, and it continues to grow. Discover Nikkei is embarking on an ambitious major redesign and growth initiative to become a truly interactive site and an indispensable resource—and platform—for the future global Nikkei community.

Walk beside us in our journey as we amplify JANM’s voice and lead the way to a more just future.
