Fresh Words & Actions: "Two in LA" by Rhiana Yazzie
A staged reading of a play about a young Navajo woman’s shocking discovery of real life in Los Angeles. In her hometown of Cuba, New Mexico, others could not see past Nita’s ethnicity, but in LA she could be anyone she wanted to be. Thrown into the middle of post-9/11 immigration decrees and their inherent biased nature, Nita is forced to experience a physical and emotional displacement of her own.
A dram-edy, Two in LA is Los Angeles from the perspective of two of America’s Native inhabitants. Rhiana Yazzie is a Navajo playwright originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She is the former Associate Artistic Director of a Native American theatre company in Albuquerque, where she wrote, directed, and produced plays, and acted, designed, and created costumes. Yazzie has received numerous accolades as a playwright and her work has been produced throughout the West.
