The Democracy Center Celebrates Civic Season with a Dance Performance and More on June 24, 2023

LOS ANGELES, CA – The National Center for the Preservation of Democracy (the Democracy Center) at JANM celebrates Civic Season (Juneteenth–July 4) with a dance performance and more on Saturday, June 24, 2023 from 4 p.m.–7 p.m. on the JANM Plaza. This event is free and open to the public; RSVPs are recommended and can be made at janm.org/events/calendar.

Civic Season unites America’s newest and oldest federal holidays together, creating a movement to understand the past and shape the future. The Democracy Center’s celebration will feature “Vectors,” a live dance performance choreographed by renowned artist, Jay Carlon. “Vectors” draws on the Filipino principle of kapwa, the shared inner self, to create a connective experience. It also offers a nuanced depiction of pervasive power dynamics within people’s lives, communities, and global collective. By displaying vectors of identity and connection through active listening, community connection, and seeking the embodiment of decolonial liberation, “Vectors” illuminates how people are bound and pulled out towards liberation.

The celebration will also include safety demonstrations from Seniors Fight Back and a live and virtual Civics Quiz Competition with the chance to win prizes. Arrive early to participate in Little Tokyo Community Council’s Delicious Little Tokyo which celebrates the legacy of historic Little Tokyo's vibrant restaurant culture.
