JANM Mourns Losses of Los Angeles Area Wildfires

Editor’s note: JANM’s Pavilion is closed for renovation; programs will continue on the JANM campus and at other locations at janm.org/OnTheGo

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) is deeply saddened by the loss of life and devastation caused by the ongoing wildfires in the Los Angeles area. JANM feels for everyone affected by the Palisades, Eaton, and Hurst fires in Pacific Palisades, Altadena, La Cañada Flintridge, Monrovia, Sierra Madre, Pasadena, the San Fernando Valley, and in nearby communities.

Although JANM is currently closed to the public during its renovation, the Museum’s offices will remain closed until the danger has passed in an ongoing effort to keep JANM staff and volunteers safe during the unpredictable and highly volatile conditions and to help keep roads clear for emergency vehicles and evacuees in the affected areas. While JANM and its Collection are currently unaffected, the Museum is continuing to monitor the evolving situation. During this emergency, staff and volunteer availability is limited so please note that some museum services may be delayed.

“Our hearts are with everyone who is affected by this disaster. The loss of life, homes, businesses, and livelihoods is tragic and unimaginable. We are deeply grateful to the fire fighters, first responders and fellow Angelenos who have put their lives at risk to keep most of us safe. We have a long road ahead of us during this challenging time. May we all find moments of refuge and connection together,” said Ann Burroughs, JANM President and CEO.
