LOS ANGELES, CA – The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) supports efforts to recognize civil rights activist Fred Korematsu with the reintroduction of legislation for the Fred Korematsu Congressional Gold Medal Act, which would posthumously award a Congressional Gold Medal to Korematsu, and the reintroduction of legislation to establish the designate January 30, 2025, as Fred Korematsu Day of Civil Liberties to the 119th Congress.

“Reintroducing this legislation to Congress will ensure that all Americans learn from this history and recognize Fred Korematsu’s important contributions. He stood against racism and xenophobia, not just for his generation but for those to come. In his legal fight against the unjust incarceration of Japanese Americans, Korematsu endured criminal conviction and community ostracization. This legislation serves as a powerful reminder of the civil liberties we must remain vigilant in protecting,” said Ann Burroughs, JANM President and CEO.
