The Grassroots Redress Movement: A Conversation with Activists, Then and Now

Members of Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress (NCRR) will discuss the many contributions needed to secure the passage of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 which provided a government apology and redress to Japanese Americans who were forced to leave their homes and businesses during World War II. NCRR compiled accounts of the redress campaign into a recently published book, The Grassroots Struggle for Japanese American Redress and Reparations.
Artist David Monkawa, activist Miya Iwataki, and writer Guy Aoki will recount key elements to the campaign, followed by a discussion with artist/educator Tony Osumi, Little Tokyo Community Council Managing Director Kristin Fukushima, and June Hibino and Sean Miura of Nikkei Progressives. Excerpts from the book will be read by the authors.
A short clip from Tales of Clamor will be shown at the program, highlighting the CWRIC hearings and the Japanese American community’s breaking of silence. Tales of Clamor premiered at the JACCC’s Aratani Theatre earlier this year and was created by traci kato kiriyama and Kennedy Kabasares of PULL Project.
