2025 Los Angeles Day of Remembrance

The annual Los Angeles Day of Remembrance commemorates the signing of Executive Order 9066 on February 19, 1942, by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Executive Order 9066 authorized the US military to forcibly remove persons of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast and set into motion their incarceration into concentration camps during World War II. During JANM on the Go we are pleased to partner with the Los Angeles DOR Committee for this year's commemoration at the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple.

This year’s theme, A Legacy of Courage: Nikkei Women Persevering Through Incarceration and Beyond, celebrates Nikkei women’s stories, their determination to rebuild and thrive after World War II, and their contributions to our community and culture. The program will feature a discussion between multigenerational Nikkei women and commemorate women leaders throughout the history of the Japanese American community. More details on the program and speakers will be announced closer to the date.

The Los Angeles DOR Committee is a coalition of organizations, including Go For Broke National Education Center, Japanese American Citizens League-Pacific Southwest District, Japanese American National Museum, Little Tokyo Service Center, Manzanar Committee, Nikkei for Civil Rights & Redress, Nikkei Progressives, and Organization of Chinese Americans-Greater Los Angeles.
