JANM Urges the Bureau of Land Management to Reconsider the Proposal to Erase Viewshed and Heritage of Minidoka National Historic Site

LOS ANGELES, CA – The Japanese American National Museum (JANM) urges the Bureau of Land Management to reconsider its proposal for the Lava Ridge Wind Project that would erase the viewshed and heritage of the Minidoka National Historic site in southern Idaho. If the proposal is approved, 241 wind turbines that are 660 feet tall would be built within view of the original site of the Minidoka concentration camp. 

“Building wind turbines where 13,000 people of Japanese ancestry were incarcerated, where descendants continue to return, and where everyone can reflect, connect, and learn about this important place in American history does a grave disservice to how these stories will be told, interpreted, and remembered—not only today but for generations to come. Minidoka must remain a sacred place of reflection, education, and national consciousness,” said Ann Burroughs, JANM President and CEO.
