Witnessing History: A Conversation With Stan Honda

A panel discussion with photojournalist Stan Honda and author Sharon Yamato examines the experiences of Arab Americans following September 11, 2001 and of Japanese Americans following December 7, 1941. Stan Honda, who captured some of the moving and unforgettable images of September 11, embodies the link between the two experiences. His parents, American citizens of Japanese descent, were incarcerated during World War II. Stan’s photographs—of both the World Trade Center tragedy and the sites of former detention camps—illustrate the individual and community struggle against insurmountable odds. Sharon Yamato is the author of Moving Walls: Preserving the Barracks of America’s Concentration Camps which documents the Japanese American National Museum’s 1994 initiative to recover an original barracks building from Heart Mountain, Wyoming to be displayed in Los Angeles. The book features photographs by Stan Honda.

The photographs and words of Stan Honda are featured in a 30-minute video presentation entitled Eyewitness: Photojournalist Stan Honda, September 11, and the Japanese American Experience which will air in the Japanese American National Museum from September 11 through October 12, 2003.
