Coming to America in the 1960s

Featuring: Immigrant Etsuko Wada and her Bi-racial Daughter Grace

The Occupation of Japan in the post-World War II era brought about major changes, including marriages between Japanese and Americans and the birth of their bi-racial children. While the changing American immigration laws allowed Japanese to migrate in the 1960s to the U.S., Japanese parents and their hapa children faced many cultural challenges to find acceptance domestically. Etsuko Wada had the added task of raising her daughter Grace as a single parent in a foreign country.

Come hear Etsuko discuss in Japanese her experiences with her daughter Grace Lee at a special program.

This program is sponsored by the Atsuhiko & Ina Goodwin Tateuchi Foundation in partnership with the Japanese American National Museum.
