Music For Kabuki

Come learn the secrets of the awesome and traditional form of Japanese theatre and music known as kabuki. An informative lecture and demonstration featuring Katada Kai, USA, will provide insights at the Japanese American National Museum, 369 East First Street in Little Tokyo. Katada Kai will play an afternoon of classical Kabuki-style music, and Madam Kikusa, Director of Katada Kai, will give an explanation of Nagauta Hayashi (Kabuki and Noh drama ensemble music), making this event one you don’t want to miss! To be held on Saturday, May 23, 1998, from 2 p.m.–3 p.m., the cost is just $5 for Museum members and $9 for non-members, which includes Museum admission. The Katada Kai ensemble consists of traditional Japanese percussion (tsuzumi, taiko, ohkawa), flutes (shinobue, nohkan), and string instruments (shamisen). Masakazu Yoshizawa and Norkio Hoshi, Katada Kai members, will be joined by the Museum’s own artists in residence, Lillian Nakano and Glenn Horiuchi on shamisen.
